This morning the Sun Times reported that top cop CPD Supt. Jody Weiss is going to up-armor his 13,500 street officers with M4 carbine rifles in the near future. The move is ostensibly to match gang firepower with po-po firepower on the city's mean streets. No word yet on how CPD is going to pay for the rifles, or what kind of retraining program is going to be implemented at the academy to make sure they know how to use them properly. The two sides to this coin? Out-of-shape CPD officers now will be able to shoot their doughnuts from a greater distance with better accuracy than with their current side arms.
